The Indian government is preparing a new tender to add between 12,000 and 15,000 high-end Nvidia GPUs under the India AI Mission. This mission is a major national effort to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence infrastructure.
GPUs are powerful computer chips that support modern AI systems. They are needed to train large AI models and to run advanced tools such as data analysis systems, language-based applications, and automation platforms.
Reports say the new tender will further expand India’s AI computing capacity. Through earlier procurement rounds, the country has already crossed 17,000 GPUs. Once all approved systems become fully operational, India’s total AI computing strength could rise to more than 40,000 GPUs. This number could grow even higher after the new additions.
The government is expected to purchase some of Nvidia’s most advanced AI-focused chips, including the B100 and B200 models. These GPUs are designed to handle heavy AI workloads and complex computing tasks.
These computing resources will be offered at subsidized rates to Indian startups, researchers, academic institutions, and enterprises. By providing access at lower costs than global market prices, the government aims to reduce one of the biggest challenges in AI development, which is the high cost of computing power.
This move is part of India’s larger plan to build strong domestic AI capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign infrastructure. Officials are also exploring long-term strategies to support local manufacturing of AI chips, possibly through partnerships with global technology firms.
Industry experts believe that increasing GPU capacity will help India compete globally in AI research and innovation. It is also expected to support local startups and strengthen digital public infrastructure.
The India AI Mission reflects the government’s goal to make artificial intelligence development affordable, accessible, and scalable across multiple sectors in the country.
